What’s the eagle-i Search?

The eagle-i Search is a robust search engine that uses the power of biomedical vocabularies and semantic technologies to find research resources quickly.

Search Terms

Type a search term into the search box on the eagle-i site. While you're typing, terms from the eagle-i biomedical resource vocabulary are suggested automatically.

Search Results

On the results page, Search provides a the resource name, type, and location. To get narrow the results, filter by one of the following methods:

1. 1. Click a resource type in the sidebar menu to constrain the search to only return results of that type..
2. 2. Select an institution to return only results located at that institution.

When you select a resource type, such as Reagent, additional filters may appear. For example, you may enter the name, or a part of the name, of a laboratory to see only results located in a certain lab. You may enter the name, or part of the name, of an instrument manufacturer to only see results from that manufacturer.

How does the search box auto-suggestion feature work?

The Search auto-suggest list matches the the typed text with terms in the eagle-i biomedical resource vocabulary.

Can I carry out an advanced search?

You can use special syntax to modify Search behavior. For example:

• • Search by phrase: To search for two or more words as a phrase, enclose them in quotation marks.
• Wildcard search: Use an asterisk (*) to carry out a wildcard search. For example, a search for pax* finds results containing the word Pax1-Truncated-EnR and Pax1-Truncated-VP16.
• Boolean search: You can structure your search to mark some words or phrases as required and to exclude others. To require a particular word, prefix the word with a plus sign (+); to exclude a word or phrase, prefix the word with a minus sign (-). For example, the search term fusion protein returns the results containing the word fusion OR protein. The search term +fusion protein returns results that must contain fusion and optionally protein.

If you search for the following words:

  Construct insert  APP shRNA

Search returns results that contain at least one of these four words: construct, insert, app, or shrna.

It is equivalent to saying construct OR insert OR app OR shrna

If you prefix one or more word with a +, that word becomes required.  For example:

  Construct insert  +APP +shRNA

Tells the search engine that each result MUST contain the word app and shrna, and optionally, the words construct or insert.  (A result is ranked higher if it contains the optional words.)

You can combine this with phrase searching, putting quotes around multiple words.  For example, if you enter:

  “Construct insert” APP shRNA

The result must contain the two words together, construct insert OR app OR shrna.  Note that results that only contain the insert do not appear.

Phrase searches can be combined with + , for example:

  +“Construct insert” APP shRNA

Means that the result MUST contain construct insert, and may optionally contain app or shrna.

Can I search external databases?

You can search external databases with eagle-i. The default search returns results from the eagle-i data repository. Select the NIF, PubMed, or Entrez Gene button to see search results from each data repository.
